Harry Maguire says Manchester United’s dramatic “statement” win over Manchester City will strengthen his belief in the team as they adapt to a new system under Ruben Amorim.
Josko Gvardiol’s header put City on the path to a much-needed victory at the Etihad on Sunday, but United captain Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot in the 88th minute.
Amad Diallo won that penalty and then conjured up a memorable 90th-minute winner as Amorim celebrated their biggest win since replacing the sacked Erik ten Hag last month.
“It was a difficult start to the season for us and our fans didn’t have much to be happy about,” said defender Maguire. “It was a great performance that we came here, had 50-50 balls and had the same number of shots as them.

“This hasn’t happened in recent years, so there is improvement, but we still have a long way to go.”
United suffered Premier League defeats to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest earlier this month and remain a lowly 13th in the table after a poor campaign so far.
“Obviously in the Premier League we’ve had a string of defeats, so coming here and making a statement is really important for our confidence and belief in where we’re going and where Ruben will take us.” Maguire said.
“I’m sure it will be a positive journey.”
United’s victory meant City’s disastrous run of form extended to eight defeats in 11 games in all competitions.
Two of those defeats were overseen by Amorim, who led Sporting Lisbon to a stunning 4-1 Champions League victory before moving to Manchester.
“I think you can see that we have a good structure, a good style of play and the way he wants us to work,” Maguire said of the new manager’s impact. “But yes, I think he has very good tactical requirements. He has proven to be a winner.”
