Zimbabwe announces squad for Test series against Afghanistan; Ben Curran among seven uncapped players named in line-up

Zimbabwe have announced their squad for the two-match home Test series against Afghanistan, which starts on December 26.

As many as seven uncapped players were included in the 17-person squad, led by veteran Craig Ervine. The uncapped players in the squad are opening batsman Ben Curran, middle-order batsman Johnathan Campbell, wicketkeepers Tadiwanashe Marumani and Nyasha Mayavo, pace bowlers Trevor Gwandu, Takudzwa Chataira and Newman Nyamhuri.

The series will be a significant moment for cricket in Zimbabwe as the country will host its first Boxing Day Test in 28 years and its first-ever New Year’s Day Test.

The First Test will be played from December 26 at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, while the New Year’s Test will be played from January 2 next year.

Zimbabwe last appeared in a Boxing Day Test at home in 1996 against England. Since then, Zimbabwe have only featured in overseas Tests on Boxing Day, facing New Zealand in 2000 and South Africa in 2017.
