Men’s National Championship: Defending champion Lakshya Chahar advances to the second round

Defending champion Lakshya Chahar (80kg) put in a dominant performance to defeat Sahil in turn by unanimous decision as boxers from the traditionally powerful Service Sports Control Board (SSCB) continued to dominate in the Senior National Boxing Championships in Bareilly on Thursday.

With this victory, Chahar, who represented India at the Asian Games and the World and Asian Championships, advanced to the second round of the event.

Govind Sahani (60kg), who started his campaign on Wednesday with an impressive victory over Mohammad Aarif of Jammu and Kashmir, continued his impressive run by defeating Gourav Mazumder of Assam 5-0.

It was the second consecutive victory for Sahani, the silver medalist of the 2023 Strandja Memorial International Boxing Tournament.

It was also a productive day for the Punjabi boxers with Gopi securing a deserved victory in the flyweight (50 kg) category. Jayshandeep Singh showed his skills and triumphed in the bantamweight category (55 kg).

Adding to the team’s success was the fact that Nikhil took an emphatic victory in the lightweight category (60 kg) and Kanwarpreet Singh finished the day with an impressive performance in the super heavyweight category (+90 kg).
