Hockey India League 2024-25: Brinkman brace helps Kalinga Lancers ease past Delhi SG Pipers

Ichry Brinkman scored a brilliant goal as Lancers decimated Delhi SG Pipers 5-1 in the Hockey India League at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium on Thursday.

Lancers’ third win improved their position to third place, while Pipers, who missed 11 penalty corners, remained bottom of the table after their sixth straight defeat.

Pipers showed promise, scoring 10 entries into the circle in the first half before flattering to deceive.

The Lancers, who penetrated the D four times, advanced in the 11th minute. Briton Nicholas Bandurak ran around, took a shot, and then effectively scored a goal after the rebound.

The Pipers moved the ball well on both wings and attacked the Lancers more frequently. In the closing moments of the second quarter, Iktidar Ishrat was unable to convert a long pass from Jake Whetton, and the Pipers struggled to finish.

Pipers continued to press and won three more penalty corners just before the break, but were unable to get past the alert Krishan Pathak.

The Lancers made good use of counter-attacks to gain momentum, scoring four goals in nine minutes of the third quarter, despite Pipers missing the services of Jarmanpreet Singh at the back.

Belgian pair Alex Hendrickx and Arthur van Doren combined well to convert a short corner following a variation as the latter took the rebound following the former’s successful strike.

Brinkman stole the ball from Varun Kumar and went inside. A few minutes later, with goalkeeper Pawan grounded, he pounced on another loose ball and scored his second goal.

Gursahibjit Singh crossed from the right to increase the score to 5-0.

Corey Weyer’s reverse hit on a solo run cut the lead in the final quarter.
