Bobby George has called on the PDC to revive the popular tournament following the upcoming rebranding of the World Masters.
George was an icon of the sport in the 1970s and 1980s and is considered one of the greatest players never to win the World Darts Championship.
However, he won the News of the World Darts Championship twice and pleaded with the PDC to reinstate the tournament in a short format.

The tournament was famous for its extremely short format, played from one to three games, and George won the tournament without losing a leg.
With a rebranding of the Winmau World Masters on the horizon, George wants the PDC to bring back the tournament in a short format.
Speaking exclusively to The Darts Insider, George stated: “I would love to see PDC go to a best-of-three 501 or a best-of-three 301, a double-entry and a double-up.
“This is a player test. The pressure is on you. You can’t make a single mistake. When playing this game, you must wear a diaper. That would be interesting. I wouldn’t do that.
Only three legs, the pressure is mounting. As soon as the message appears: keep playing, that’s it, or you’re out of the game. It would be interesting to see how they handle it. They could put twice as much 96 in it because it is so fast.”
George won the tournament in 1979 and 1986, with the final tournament held in 1997 after Phil Taylor won the championship for the first time.
Bobby George sees the News of the World as an important tournament
Even though he is often called one of the greatest players never to win the World Darts Championship, George considers his News of the World victories to be a World Championship.
Speaking exclusively to The Darts Insider, George said: “I did it. I won the world championship once, I won the News of the World and that was my world championship.
George was runner-up at the BDO World Darts Championship in 1980 and 1994, losing to Eric Bristow and John Part.
