Boxxer plans to launch an all-female bill in London in March, matching Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price to lead a wider attempt to prioritize rebuilding the UK women’s boxing sport.
Jonas, 40, defended his IBF welterweight title in Liverpool on Saturday and defeated Croatia’s Ivana Habazin to become the WBC champion. At the time, Price, 30, was defending his WBA title while becoming the first man to defeat Colombia’s Bexcy Mateus.
Before they even entered the ring that night, the fight for all three titles had begun, with Ben Shalom’s Boxxer organization looking to put them on the top of a popular all-female bill in 2022. Same card as WBC lightweight champion Caroline Dubois and potential Francesca Hennessy.
Saudi Arabia’s influence on boxing has led to women’s boxing being overlooked both domestically in the UK and globally, but Shalom told BoxingScene: “We are looking at something very special. If you look at 2022, 2023, women’s boxing is British boxing The shining star in the world and everyone is talking about, “Why can’t men be more like women? ”. Men’s boxing enjoys resurgence as season begins in Riyadh, but women’s boxing [Katie] Taylor-[Amanda] Serrano hasn’t experienced the same thing this year.
“So we’re planning a huge women’s night in London at the beginning of March in a very prestigious venue that doesn’t usually host boxing matches, it’s going to be something very special. In an ideal world, the winner [Jonas and Price] will be on the card.
“Sky Sports is passionate about women’s sport and that’s where we will see the greatest success [in 2025]. Boxxer has a huge responsibility to make sure women’s boxing gets back to where it was and we help get it back to where it was. I can see plans for next year revolving around Lauren, Caroline, Fran – there’s even talk of Savannah Marshall coming back for her rematch – and Natasha Jonas. There are going to be some big nights.
“We want women’s boxing back on the front page; on the back; we think our women’s night, Lauren and Caroline and even Fran will be there – there’s some really good talent out there who could be the next Savannah Marshall, Katie Taylor and Natasha Jonas, we’ve had so much success with them.”
On January 11, the talented Dubois defended her title for the first time against Canada’s Jessica Kamara. When asked if she had enough time to prepare for the match in March, Shalom replied: “We hope to compete with Te… Leigh Harper fights that we think make sense – unification, that’s the fight we want;”
