Abdullah Hayayei: UK Athletics charged with manslaughter after Paralympian’s death

UK Athletics has been accused of manslaughter in the death of Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei.

Hayayey he died at the age of 36 after a metal cage fell on him during training at Newham Leisure Center in London in July 2017.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has charged UK Athletics Limited with “corporate manslaughter and breaches of health and safety regulations”.

Keith Davies, sporting director of the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships, was also charged with “manslaughter by gross negligence and breach of occupational health and safety regulations”.

UK Athletics and Davies, 77, will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on January 31.

At the time of the incident, Hayayei was preparing for the World Championships in London.

The thrower from the United Arab Emirates was to compete in the shot put, discus and javelin F34 events.

Hayayei, a father of five, placed sixth in the javelin and seventh in the shot put on his Paralympic debut in Rio in 2016.

London 2017 was supposed to be his second appearance at the World Championships. At the 2015 event in Doha, Qatar, Hayayei placed fifth in the discus and eighth in the shot put.

A minute’s silence was observed in Hayayei’s memory during the opening ceremony of the World Cup at the London Stadium.
