Jack Butland was in the sticks for Rangers for the first time in 2025 after a foot injury kept him out of the last five matches.
However, there were rumors about his form before the layoff.
A mistake against St Mirren led to penalties and defeat for Rangers last month, and then he was let off the hook when Motherwell caught him out in the corner, only to have Tony Watt’s goal disallowed at the end of December.
These were just two examples of Butland making mistakes that he simply didn’t make last term.
So his own goal at Old Trafford – punched into the corner of his own net – will only bring closer scrutiny to his position as the number one goalkeeper.
Especially as Liam Kelly has performed effectively in his absence.
However, despite his mistakes the former England goalkeeper also showed why he is Philippe Clement’s first choice.
He made five saves in the first half, including a superb one to deny Amad Diallo.
The Rangers manager seems unlikely to drop him, but that won’t stop conversations about his role continuing.
“It’s a terrible mistake and Butland himself knows it,” former Rangers winger Neil McCann told Sportsround.
“I don’t think it’s a flaw in his game, he’s maybe a little rusty being out injured.
“He’s going to hate himself tonight. He’s going to blame himself in the dressing room.
“I don’t think he can do anything about the winner, it’s straight at his feet.”
