Keely Hodgkinson wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024

Olympic 800m gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson has been named the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year for 2024.

The 22-year-old ended her wait for a world title in Paris in 2024 after winning consecutive silver medals since finishing second on her Olympic debut in Tokyo three years ago.

Hodgkinson also defended her European 800m title in Rome and became the sixth fastest woman of all time, improving her British record in the London Diamond League to one minute 54.61 seconds.

“I’m a bit shocked,” Hodgkinson told BBC One.

“I’m more excited about my coach because without his guidance, I wouldn’t be here.

“This year has been amazing and I achieved everything I set out to do on the outdoor track. I hope you enjoyed watching Paris.”

Darts player Luke Littler was second and English cricketer Joe Root was third.

Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were also shortlisted for the award by the expert panel, with the winner chosen by public vote.

Hodgkinson is the fourth woman in a row, after the England goalkeeper, to win the award Mary Earps was chosen Sports Personality of the Year 2023.

Leigh track and field coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows were recognized with the award Coach of the Year Award earlier in the night.
