Scottish Premiership picks: Edinburgh derby kicks of Boxing Day action

One of the Premiership’s newest managers, Simo Valcari, faces a big challenge at St Johnstone.

The Perth side are one point behind in 12th place with just one point from a possible 12 so far in December.

However, Saints supporters will know that all three of their defeats this month have come by one-goal margins, while the point they picked up at Aberdeen only came after the Dons came back from a goal down.

The short version is that it’s tough in this league and Valkyrie’s side need to find a way to finish on the right side of marginal games.

Dundee United aim for their second straight win against their Boxing Day visitors, Saints.

With three wins and a draw from 11 so far, Finland’s former Motherwell player Valkyrie hasn’t enjoyed the strongest start at McDiarmid Park but she’s not alone. Hearts’ Neil Critchley has won five from 15 while David Gray at Hibernian recently pushed his win percentage into the high 20s.

Again, it’s tight in the Scottish top flight, but that means a win can go a long way and the Valkyries still have it in them to guide St Johnstone down the table in time for the New Year.
