The illegal use of pyrotechnics during Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup final will be added to SPFL allegations already made against Celtic and Rangers.
Earlier this month, the governing body announced it would take action following the situation similar displays in the semi-final of the competition, with Motherwell also cited.
The clubs face potential fines and will appear before an independent panel early next year.
“The annoying displays that took place before and during Sunday’s match were completely unacceptable and once again led to a delay in the start of the match,” the SPFL said in a statement.
“The SPFL will be co-operating with Police Scotland in relation to its investigation into this illegal behavior and these incidents will also be taken into account as part of the SPFL’s ongoing disciplinary investigation into both clubs in relation to the use of pyrotechnics.”
A specific law banning the use of pyrotechnics in stadiums in Scotland was introduced in 2023. Before the final, Old Firm managers Brendan Rodgers and Philippe Clement condemned their use.
Celtic lifted the cup after penalties, and after extra time the rivals from Glasgow settled on a score of 3:3.
Some fans took to the tracks at the national stadium to celebrate, with the SPFL adding that it will review the match delegate’s report to consider the “unacceptable fan intrusion”.
The league’s rules state that each club, “where reasonably practicable”, must ensure that fans do not engage in “unacceptable conduct”; to identify fans who engage in such behavior at the match; and take “proportionate disciplinary measures” against such fans.
