John Cooney: Irish boxer dies after suffering brain injury in Belfast fight

The 28-year-old boxer in the scale of super-e -roe, John Cooney, died after the defeat of Welsh, Nathan Howells in Belfast last Saturday.

The Irish boxer suffered an intracranial hemorrhage and underwent surgery to alleviate the pressure on the brain after a fight in the Ulster hall.

Galway Man Cooney was rated by the medical team in the ring before he was pulled out and moved to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

The competition was detained in the ninth round in Ulster Hall in the first defense of Celtic Celtic title Super Feather in weight.

Galway Boxer won the Celtic title with victory in the first round with Liam Gaynor in November 2023 in the 3aren sold out in Dublin, on Undercard of Katie Taylor’s Revenge at Chantelle Cameron.

Then Cooney spent a year outside the ring, recovering after his hand injury before he returned to Tampla Maharusi from Tanzania in October 2024 in London.
