Classy Chris Dobey survives Alexander Merkx test at PDC World Darts Championship

Chris Dobey was in great form when “Hollywood” won 3-1 and killed “Alexander the Great” Alexander Merkx who played a decent match but lost to the former major winner 3-1 in sets at the stadium PDC World Darts Championships,

Merkx previously faced a difficult challenge to eliminate the No. 15 seed. Merkx won 3-0 in straight sets against Stephen Burton in the first round, but averaged just 78 points. At least 15 points were needed to make the match with “Hollywood” interesting. Merkx averaged over 90 points this time and managed to put a few legs up.

In the first set, Dobey immediately took control with a 14-darter break. Merkx missed a breakaway opportunity before Dobey made it 2-0 with a 19-darter shot. Merkx tied it at 2-1 at 52 before Dobey retired the set at 69.

Merkx then couldn’t capitalize on his two small chances in the second set. In both games one and two, Merkx got one shot at a double, but both times it missed the outer ring. Dobey scored twice to increase the score to 2-0. Dobey then won the set 3-0, ending with 87.

However, the 30-year-old Dutchman started playing strongly in the third set. He held a 15-darter and then ripped Dobey’s leg off, rolling a 68. Having a 14-darter in the next game, Merkx won the set himself, 3-0.

More seemed possible when Merkx shot a 67 to break Dobey early in the fourth set. However, Merkx missed a chance to double the lead and Dobey immediately broke the tie, finishing at 122. In the third game, Merkx had another break chance but missed a double 18. Dobey was on the verge of winning with a double 8 and pulled the trigger on using a 12-darter.
