Women’s Ashes 2025: England’s only warm-up match abandoned because of rain in Sydney

England’s only warm-up match in the build-up to the Women’s Ashes has been canceled due to rain in Sydney.

After several rain delays, the match score was reduced to 35 overs per team before the weather ended the Australian Governor General’s XI’s innings with a score of 183-8 from 28.2 overs.

England were then given a revised target of 188 in 28 overs but play did not resume at North Sydney Oval.

However, captain Heather Knight said during the toss that she was more interested in getting her bowlers through the legs.

The players struggled for consistency as openers Alyssa Healy and Georgia Voll added 91 in 11.2 overs, with 21-year-old Voll impressing with 57 off 42 balls.

The pair and Georgia Wareham were the only players in the eleven who were also included in the Australian Ashes squad, with leg-spin all-rounder Wareham taking only three wickets as England’s spinners fought back after a wayward start.

Sophie Ecclestone removed both openers to take the score to 3-27, with the middle order reeling to 147-6 before a flurry of crosses from Rhys McKenna and Nicole Faltum helped to start chipping away at the deficit until the rain resumed.
