January 27 – State associations are planning a no-confidence motion against All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey (pictured).
India has 36 state associations and more than 20 are reported to want to move a no-confidence motion against Chaube. One-third of the association is required to hold an extraordinary congress for that purpose. No franchise in Jammu, Tamil Nadu and Kashmir. The state associations are understood to have the support of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) political party.
Chaubey is a member of Narendra Modi’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He came to power in the AIFF after the exit of Praful Patel, defeating former India international Vaichung Bhutia in the 2022 elections.
However, AIFF secretary Shaji Prabhakaran has been sacked. Last month, Prabhakaran wrote to the AIFF’s ethics committee as well as the AFC and FIFA, initiating a complaint against Chaube for violating the ethics code.
“There are many instances where Mr. Kalyan Chaubey has caused serious reputational and financial damage to AIFF,” wrote Prabhakaran. “All his actions have had dire consequences for the beautiful game of India. The Indian men’s team has not won a single match in the 2024 calendar, a direct result of his actions.”
He accused Chaubey of conflict of interest, attempted bribery, misrepresentation, misrepresentation and violation of the AIFF constitution as president of the governing body.
