The Copa del Rey was held in 1903 and the Spanish Cup has been held annually since then.
The Copa del Rey started with just three teams, but has grown over the years to include 120 clubs in 2024/25.
The tournament was discontinued in 1937 or 1938 due to the Spanish Civil War and was renamed the Cup of the Presidents of the Republic between 1932 and 1936, and was known as the Copa General during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

irun racing club
Two Copa del Rey finals were held in 1913 due to disagreements between the Spanish Football Federation (FECF) and the Spanish Football Club Union (UECF).
Barcelona defeated Real Sociedad in the UECF final and Basque side Atlético Irun beat Atlético after a FECF replay. Irun Athletic Club later became Real Union.
San Sebastian Cycling Club
As the name suggests, Club Ciclista de San Sebastián is a cycling club in the Basque city. Its football department won the Copa del Rey, beating Espanyol 3-1 in the 1909 final.
Technically, though, the winner was San Sebastian Recreational Club, who used the name Club Ciclista because they were not registered for the cup competition. A few months after this victory, the players founded another club: Real Sociedad. The 1909 Copa America is often described as Real Sociedad’s first trophy, even though the club was not officially founded until five months later.

With Eto’o’s two goals and Pandiani’s penalty, Mallorca defeated Huelva 3-0 to win the 2003 Copa del Rey final.
Mallorca has also finished runners-up three times, losing 0-1 to Atletico Madrid in 1991, being eliminated by Barcelona in a penalty shootout in 1998, and being eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in another penalty shootout in 2024. beat.

One of several early successful Basque clubs in the Copa del Rey, Getcio Arenas won the 1919 final, beating Barcelona 5-2 in overtime.
Arenas also finished second in 1917, 1925 and 1927. A founding member of La Liga, Arenas was gradually relegated after being relegated from Spain’s top flight in 1935.

Royal Society
Real Sociedad was founded in September 1909, a few months after the San Sebastian club won the Copa del Rey final. This victory is often regarded as Real Sociedad’s first trophy as the players later formed Anoeta. Real Sociedad were finalists in 1913, 1928 and 1951 and won the Copa del Rey in 1987, beating Atletico Madrid on penalties after a 2-2 draw in Zaragoza. A year later, Real Sociedad reached the final again, but lost 0-1 to Barcelona in Madrid.
Mikel Oyarzabal as the team from San Sebastian beat Basque rivals Athletic Club in the 2020 final held due to the Covid-19 pandemic in April 2021 (Athletic Club) scored a penalty kick in the match. In the two Copa America finals in 1910, Real Sociedad lost to Athletic Club, but San Sebastian competed as Vasconia SC because their team had not yet been registered.

Three-time Copa del Rey champions Real Union have enjoyed great success in the early stages of the cup campaign.
The Basque club, based in the town of Irun, won the Copa America in 1918, 1924 and 2027, reaching the final in 1922. Real Madrid have not competed in Spain’s top flight since 1932.
Real Betis
Real Betis reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time in 1931, but the Seville-based club waited another 46 years to win the competition.
Betis won the title twice, in 1977 and 2005, and also recently claimed the trophy in 2022, beating Valencia in the final. In 1997, Vidiblanco lost to Barcelona and finished second.
Spanish
Espanyol reached the Copa del Rey final in 1911 and 1915, but the Catalan club did not win the title for the first time until 1929.
The Barcelona team has won the championship four times and finished runners-up five times, beating Atletico Madrid 2-1 in the 2000 final and Real Zaragoza 4-1 in the 2006 final.

Sevilla won the title in 1935, 1935 and 1948, and twice more in 2007 and 2010.
The last two wins came against Getafe and Atletico Madrid. Sevilla have also finished runners-up four times, most recently losing to Barcelona in the finals in 2016 and 2018.
Real Zaragoza
In the 2004 Copa del Rey final, Real Zaragoza defeated Real Madrid 3-2, surprising the pre-match favorite Real Madrid.
Two years later, Zaragoza lost 4-1 to Espanyol in the 2006 final. In total, the Aragonese club won the Copa America six times – in 1964, 1966, 1986, 1994, 2001 and 2004 – and reached the final five additional times.
Valencia
Valencia won the Copa del Rey for the first time in 1941 (then known as the Copa del Rey).
Valencia have won the title eight times in total and last won the cup in 2019, beating Barcelona in the final in Seville. The Mestalla-based club have also finished runners-up 11 times.
atletico madrid
In the 2013 Copa del Rey final, Atlético Madrid defeated arch-rivals Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for the first time in all competitions since 1999.
The victory for Diego Simeone’s side gave Rojiblancos their 10th Copa America title and the club’s first since their league and cup double in 1995/96. First win in this tournament. Atleti first won the title in 1960 and have been runners-up nine times.
real Madrid
In 1905, FC Madrid won the Copa del Rey for the first time, a victory that started a run of four consecutive titles.
The capital club, later Real Madrid, won the Copa del Rey for the 20th time in 2023. At that time, Real Madrid had also finished second in the cup 20 times.

Athletic Club enjoyed great success in the early years of the Copa del Rey, winning the first two editions of the cup and adding a string of titles in the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s.
After winning the league and cup double in 1983/84, the Basque club waited 30 years to win another title, but their 24th cup title came in 2024 with a penalty shootout victory over Mallorca.

Barcelona has won the Copa del Rey more times than any other club, with the Catalans’ victory in the 2020/21 season being their 31st title in the cup competition.
Barca were runners-up 11 times and won the Copa del Rey for the first time in 1910, with their former striker Lionel Messi holding a host of records in the competition, including most goals in a final players (nine).
