CHARLOTTE, NC – Season for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is over.
According to a source, Diggs will need surgery on his left knee and will be placed on injured reserve. Sources say the problem is unrelated to the anterior cruciate ligament, which he tore in training last year before the Cowboys’ third game, but will require a lengthy rehabilitation.
Diggs played in 11 games this season, in which he recorded 44 tackles, 2 interceptions and 11 pass deflections.
He was initially considered questionable for Sunday’s game, but his evaluation was downgraded to a exclusion and he did not travel to Charlotte.
Fox Sports was the first to report Diggs’ need for surgery.
He is the fifth former Pro Bowler to join the Cowboys’ reserve this year Dak Prescott (hamstring tendon avulsion), Zack Martin (ankle), DeMarcus Lawrence (foot) i DaRon Bland (foot). Micah Parsons he missed four games with a high ankle sprain but was not placed on injured reserve. Bland has already returned from IR, but it is unclear whether Lawrence, who is in the final year of his contract, will play again this season because the Cowboys have not yet opened their practice window.
Diggs’ base salary of $9 million in 2025 will become fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year. He is expected to count $14.25 million against the salary cap next season.
Diggs was able to return in the season opener after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament and had an interception in his first game against the team Cleveland Browns. At various times this season, he struggled with calf, groin and knee injuries.
He played in 71 snaps against Cincinnati Bengals after missing the previous two games against Washington’s commanders AND New York Giants.
Last Thursday, Diggs said: “I felt OK. I was just dealing with the same problem as before, but other than that I was just fighting it and pushing.”
The Cowboys had three of their best defenders – Diggs, Jourdan Lewis and Bland – played only one match together due to injuries. Bland missed the first 10 games due to foot surgery. Lewis missed one match due to neck problems.
