Gilmour and McTominay calmly resumed their steps. The team has had a great start to the season and both are happy they made the right choice.
“You want to do your best, you want to see how far you can go,” Gilmour says.
This move is another important step in the 23-year-old’s career. After leaving Rangers for Chelsea as a youngster and winning a Champions League medal, a loan move to Norwich City followed, which wasn’t easy.
Better times came for Brighton before their move to Serie A.
“Brighton was great for me when I was rebuilding there,” he adds. “I regained my confidence. When I left, it’s never easy. But you know you’re doing the right thing, you have to take care of yourself in football.”
For his part, McTominay admits it was difficult for him to leave his boyhood United, but says he had to “be careful with the number one”.
“It was a big decision, but in some ways it was quite simple,” he said. “I saw the enthusiastic fans, the coach, the players and the opportunity.
“It didn’t take me long to make the decision because I knew it was what I wanted and I would never regret it. I didn’t look back.
“I love this place. I love the fans, I love my teammates. It was a pleasure being with Billy every day, not just seeing him in Scotland, and we helped each other a lot.”
For both Gilmour and McTominay, 2025 is shaping up to be an important year. Full of promise, full of hope, full of work. Eat, sleep, train, repeat. The hard miles in search of glory continue under the watchful eye of Mr. Conte.
