Girmar’s big transfer fee could bring pressure. But because the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) calendar doesn’t align with ours – they’re still in pre-season – I think Bomber will give him some time to get to know how Chelsea will play, their expectations, the atmosphere, the people. Make that transition to London a little easier.
I don’t think it would bother Girma too much. American players are more used to that height of attention. They have always played under pressure because of the great players who have gone before them. They have had to wear big shoes all their lives. I think he will embrace the pressure.
USA players are under probation in college. Scholarships are very competitive. I was talking to USA International Tobin [Heath] Another day and he said the players know what they choose to do in college is going to set them on a certain path for life. It’s a big decision and a big choice at a young age. Girma took these experiences in his stride.
With American players, you can always be assured of confidence and professionalism. They are committed to everything. That is their foundation. That’s a trait you can never question and I never did with the USA players I played with.
He has won at the highest level and sat next to great leaders. He talks about Alex Morgan being someone who inspires him so he understands what it takes to be a proper leader. I think he will want to fill or fill the void at Chelsea. He will give voice to that group. He comes across as a very calm character and a good communicator. You need it on every winning team.
I think Girma is going to be an inspiration to many people. He is really proud of his heritage. He was the first player of Ethiopian descent to represent the United States, giving visibility to the community.
Chelsea have now added another superstar with genuine admiration in Girama. Sam Kerr is also about to return. It’s a scary prospect for players and opposing teams.
