South Wales derby: Luke Williams expects ‘ferocious’ Swansea City at Cardiff City

There were no big celebrations for Swansea on Cardiff’s visit last August as Williams’ side controlled the first half and took the lead through Liam Cullen, only to lose their way after the break and they conceded a late equalizing goal from Callum Robinson.

It marked only the second draw in this match since 2009 and frustration for Williams.

Swansea were beaten in depressing fashion on their last trip to Cardiff, with Michael Duff’s side losing 2-0 in September 2023.

However, in recent years it has been the Swans who have enjoyed the upper hand in the derby, with Cardiff – at times – struggling to cope with their neighbours’ possession-based approach.

Asked if he expected Swansea to dominate the football this weekend, Williams said: “I expect my players to be fierce and very motivated for the match.

I don’t know what it’s like in terms of possession and stuff like that. But I know the boys will be in a very intense state of mind.

“There is a different emotion [surrounding the derby] and there is no point in hiding from it. There’s no point in pretending it’s exactly the same as all the other games. This is not.”
