Miami Dolphins wide receiver Grant DuBose he remained in hospital but had movement in all his limbs after being carried off the pitch on a stretcher following a horrific helmet-to-helmet impact on a football. Houston, Texas on Sunday.
On Monday morning, the Dolphins said DuBose remained overnight at a local hospital in Houston for evaluation and initial tests showed “positive results” after the collision.
DuBose tried to catch the ball in the third quarter but was hit in the head by a safety Calen Bullock before his head violently hit the turf. He appeared to clench both fists after the punch – movements consistent with a so-called “fencing reaction” that can be common after a brain injury – and then remained motionless as medical staff rushed to his side.
The on-field emergency medical team attended to DuBose for at least 10 minutes. His shirt was cut off and a neck brace was placed while players on both teams knelt and watched anxiously.
Ultimately, DuBose was placed on a spinal board, where his hands and feet were restrained, and he was taken off the field. He had some sort of tube in his mouth and there was no sign of movement as he was taken off the field and was later taken to hospital in a stable condition.
“It’s very unfortunate,” Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa he later said, “very difficult to see live.”
Tagovailoa, who suffered multiple concussions during his NFL career, including one that resulted in him being taken off the field on a stretcher against an NFL team, Cincinnati Bengals in 2022 stated that it was difficult to continue activities after this event.
“I’m my toughest critic when it comes to ball placement,” Tagovailoa said, “when it comes to knowing where to go with the ball and all that. I just regret putting him in that position after he got hit.”
Sunday was DuBose’s first game since Week 2 because of a shoulder injury.
