December 17 – 2021 Women’s European Champions England will begin their title defense against France at the 2025 European Championships in Switzerland next summer.
They will also face 2017 Dutch champions and neighbors Wales in a tough Group D.
On Monday, the draw for the flagship women’s tournament on the continent took place, in which 16 teams took part. The four groups have developed many hit connections and local rivalries.
In Group B, world champions Spain will face Portugal. They will also face Italy and Belgium.
In group C, the Germans faced a difficult task. They first played Poland, then faced runner-up Denmark in 2017 and semi-finalist Sweden in 2022.
England manager Sarina Wiegman, who will face her home country in Group D, said: “The group is a difficult one. But at the same time, these are the facts and we knew, given the condition of the pots, that it would be difficult anyway. The women’s game is growing so fast that I don’t think things are easy anymore. We saw that we have two difficult games in the Nations League and we just have to be ready. We immediately have to be at our highest level when we enter the tournament and that makes us really strong.
Dutch manager Andries Jonker echoed her comments: “I think the winner of this group can win the whole tournament because that’s where the quality and strength of the group lies.” [D].
“It’s much easier to compare our group to Group A. We have three top teams in Group D and no top teams in Group A, with all due respect to them. But our team is used to dealing with different situations, so it is what it is. It’s always special [facing Wiegman] because we are friends. We usually wish them all the best, but as athletes we want to beat the other one. We both want to win. This means you have to hurt your friend. But we are both on the same side and mutual respect will not change.
