Brandon Robinson-Thompson threatened the second 59 card in the history of the European Tour before the disappointing finale, but still won three shots after the opening round in the Bahrain championships.
Two eagles and three birds took the Englishman Robinson-Thompson to rail in the 29th at Royal Golf Club, and the run of five birds in six holes from 12. He left him that you need to eat the last one to break the barrier 60.
But after he missed the Fairway track and greenery on a 443-jard of the ground floor, the 32-year-old abandoned his only shot of the day and had to settle for 11-fund-par 61, still a record of the course.
“I couldn’t imagine it this morning, when it rained, and a forecast for super strong winds appeared, so I’m very happy that I can start from the beginning,” said Robinson-Thompson.
“A bit sour taste in my mouth (with Bogey on 18), I do not intend to lie, but I opened my honest participation.”
Asked when he first thought about matching 59 Oliver Fisher in Portugal in 2018, Robinson-Thompson added: “After about nine holes, and then I hit him on four feet to 10.
“Unfortunately, I missed this one, but it was simply gathering many good decisions and execution.
“I would not say that it was perfect, but I was smart when I had to be and hit a few shots to 25, 30, 35 feet and luckily I made a few of them.
“I think that this is my lowest round as a professional, not to mention the DP World Tour, so he must be there as the first or second (best career), except for Sunday to finish the tour of the trip last year. ”
Another Englishman Callum Tarren was the closest contender of Robinson-Thompson to eight under the couples after Bogey-Free 64, from Scotland Richie Ramsay, France Martin Couvra and Finland Tapio Pulkanen on six.
The Australian pair of Jason Scrivener and David Micherali, who both enjoyed good old old seasons of the concert tour, had the opening rounds of the three lower 69 to sit at 23, eight outside of Robinson-Thompson’s pace.
