FIFA has confirmed that the 2024 ‘Best of the Year’ awards, which recognize the top players in both men’s and women’s football at club and national level, will be announced on Tuesday at a special event in Doha, Qatar.
Ballon d’Or winners Rodri boycotted October’s awards ceremony along with Vinicius Jr., feeling they were being ignored. Vinicius, a key player in Real Madrid’s Champions League, Spanish Super Cup and La Liga titles, was considered a front-runner but did not attend the event after it was revealed that no Real Madrid player would win the Ballon d’Or.
In the women’s category, Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmati is favored after leading the club to a historic quadruple and helping Spain win the Nations League title. However, two-time winner Alexia Putellas did not appear on the list of nominees.
The FIFA Puskas Award now recognizes the best goal in men’s football, while the new FIFA Marta Award will recognize the best goal in women’s football around the world and is named after the iconic Brazilian star.
