Ben Hogan was a little slow at the top (shaft pointing left of target). Fred’s pairs and most of the long drive guys are on the other side of the line (shaft pointing to the right of the target). I suspect you’re not as talented as Hogan or steam or can be driven over 400 yards. For most golfers, a neutral top position works best and can actually increase distance and increase accuracy. Here’s how to get it.
Take the iron out of the bag and fold it over your shoulder, keeping your elbows firmly at your sides. Ask a friend to place an alignment bar on the inside of both elbows. (You can also do this yourself by lifting the pole.) Important: Make sure the rod is parallel to the ground and adjust as necessary.
Now perform a practice backswing by rotating and then straightening your arms. Again, check that the bar is parallel to the ground and not tilted or has slipped. This is ideal for 90 percent of recreational golfers. This will help you avoid entering the ball too steeply (potential piece) or too far from center (potential jab or hook).
