Manchester City are tipped to spend in the January transfer window after a surprisingly poor first half of the 2024/25 season.
The reigning champions are sixth in the table after a disappointing spell in November and December in which they picked up just five points from nine Premier League games and also struggled in the Champions League.
There are some signs that Pep Guardiola’s side will look more like themselves after three straight wins in all competitions against Salford City, Leicester, West Ham and League Two, but reports suggest they are nonetheless set to make big strides this year in its transfer business a month to make sure it stays that way.
Manchester City predicted that they would spend a lot of money in the January transfer window
City have been linked with a triple coup Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens, Vitor Reis from Palmeira and the great Eintracht Frankfurt player Omar Marmoush, who is he is currently ranked 9th on FourFourTwo magazine’s list of the best strikers in the world.
Journalist Ben Jacobs tellingly, it put the scale of its recruitment plans into context FourFourTwo January 13: “Manchester City will be active in January. I think Premier League clubs spent £112 million in January: now Man City could be on track to exceed that.
“The transaction with Kusanow has been finalized and is only waiting for the formalities to be completed. They still want to sign Vitor Reis from Palmeiras.
“No salary figure has been agreed at the moment, but it seems to me that finances are less of an issue than giving up on Palmeiras’ desire for the player to stay until the summer, play in the Club World Cup and then leave.
“If Manchester City agrees to this specific request from Palmeiras, the parties will finally find a way to meet somewhere in the middle on the finances behind this deal.
“Obviously Omar Marmoush is a key, if not main, target for Manchester City and as we record this, talks are at an advanced stage. Marmoush has already agreed terms with City.
“It’s just a question of whether Eintracht Frankfurt, who are pushing for the Champions League, decide to sell and, if so, whether they can get a price of around €80m (£67.4m).
“The city’s valuation is slightly lower, but the city urgently needs to close the deal in January, which may mean it will have to meet Frankfurt’s asking price if it wants to complete the deal.”
The city will return to Premier League action with a trip to Brentford on Tuesday evening.
