Harry Brook has overtaken his England teammate Joe Root to become the number one Test batsman in the world rankings.
The 25-year-old overtook Root after scoring 171 points for the season the first Test of England’s current tour of New Zealand and continuing this with results of 123 and 55 w second test in Wellington, which gave him a ranking score of 898.
Root, who replaced New Zealand’s Kane Williamson at the top of the International Cricket Council rankings in July, is just one point behind Brook on 897 and could reclaim the crown when the third Test begins in Hamilton on December 14.
Following his victory in Wellington, Root was full of praise for the Yorkshire pie.
“Brooki is by far the best player in the world right now,” Root said.
“He can absorb pressure, he can apply it. He can hit you over the head in six. He can throw you over your head in six. He can spin. He can hit seams.”
Brook, who made his Test debut in 2022, has scored 2280 runs in 38 innings in 23 Tests at an average of 61.62.
