Hussein Sin Cara was originally scheduled to challenge lightweight champion and King of the Ring champion Jai Opetaia on January 8, but withdrew from the bout due to an ankle injury.
Germany’s Sin Cara, 22-0 (18 KOs), faced Australia’s Opetaia, 26-0 (20 KOs), at the Gold Coast Convention Center in Broadbeach, Queensland, Australia, but he injured his ankle. Doctors have confirmed Sin Cara’s ligament damage, which will keep Sin Cara out of action for the next three months or so, according to organizers.
Promoters Tasman Fighters, Matchroom and Goldstar Promotions say the card will go ahead as planned – with Opetaia as the main event, but a new challenger will be announced early next week.
“Unfortunately Hussain will not be able to compete but we are close to finding a replacement,” Tasman Fighters’ Michael Francis said. “We are currently in negotiations with several of the top fighters in the IBF rankings and expect to announce Jai’s next opponent by Monday. Fans can rest assured that this will remain an exciting and high-stakes fight. Eddie Hearn and Spencer Brown have done a great job with the IBF and other potential opponents.”
Opetaia, who defeated Maris Breidis in 2022 to win the lightweight belt and has successfully defended it three times since then (including a rematch with Breidis), said he was not excited for the third Haunted by 11 hour changes.
“It’s part of boxing,” Opetaia said. “I’m not worried. Whoever takes on the challenge, I’m going to be fully prepared. I’m here to prove that I’m the best, no matter who’s standing across from me.”
