Michael van Gerwen failed to win on Friday evening PDC World Darts Championships for the fourth time. The 35-year-old Dutchman lost to Alexandra Palace 7-3 in the final Łukasz Małyr. Van Gerwen was pleased with the successful tournament.
Van Gerwen did not take advantage of many scoring opportunities at the beginning of the match and soon found himself with a 4-0 deficit in sets. “I was making mistake after mistake, trying to get into a fight, and then I hit a wall,” he said Viaplay. “And then when he throws another fantastic leg kick, it’s a fucking great moment.”
Later, Van Gerwen gradually improved his form in the match and was able to win several sets. But it was too late to really complicate things for Littler. Despite losing in the final, Van Gerwen looks back on this World Cup with relative satisfaction. “I think I can continue my play in this tournament. I came from far away. I had to fight hard for it. Everything is going well. There is still a lot ahead of us,” said Van Gerwen, clearly moved.

Van Gerwen did not seem fully prepared for the match. “I think I sold myself too much at the beginning of the match. At the beginning of the match I was a bit cold and didn’t feel well.”
After a difficult year without a major title, Van Gerwen was not considered a favorite for the World Darts Championship title for the first time in years. That honor was reserved for the likes of Littler and Luke Humphries. Still, van Gerwen was there again. “If someone had told me earlier that I would be in the final, I would have agreed to it,” he said. “But still – when you stand there now – you really regret it.”
