Two-time world champion, Gary Anderson he has been waiting for the next title since 2016. However, after a few quieter years, the 53-year-old Scot is heading out Alexandra Palace for 2025 PDC World Darts Championshipsas one of those who most dreamed of lifting the Sid Waddell trophy.
Anderson is looking forward to the start of the World Darts Championships. “The World Championship… Ally Pally – that’s every darts player’s goal,” Anderson told PDC official website. “It is an iconic building and is perfect for the World Cup. Driving up this hill and seeing the Palace there is an amazing feeling. That’s when you get a knot in your stomach, and I’ve been doing this for years, so imagine that feeling when someone climbs that hill for the first time and sees that.”
2024 ‘The Flying Scotsman’ has had a strong year, winning three ranking titles, including a return to glory on a European tour. “I’m probably playing better than ever,” Anderson says happily. “I got over 110 averages – I had over 120 averages, I had 114, 113, 112. I just come in and enjoy it. Pro Tour events I love. We’ll chat and then I’ll shoot a few arrows and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun for me!”
Gary Anderson goes on the hunt for a third world title
As a result, Anderson appears ready to try to win a third world title. “Now I’m not on stage so often, but everything is going in the right direction,” he notes. “If my performance on the court transferred to the stage in every match, it would look good, but whether it will happen is a completely different story. it would be nice to win that title again, but I’m not looking that far into the future!”
“Before, you could pick a dozen potential winners – now you have two or three dozen players who could possibly lift the title,” continues Anderson, who himself starts at 10-1 odds with tournament sponsor Paddy Power. “You’ll have your favorites – Luke Humphries, [Michael] Van Gerwen, young Luke Littler. Then you have outsiders like Mike De Decker, Ritchie [Edhouse]Ryan Searle. I think it will be interesting.”
“I think there will be a lot of top players at the same level and it will be quite a battle,” he concludes. “It can cause a bad smell. There may be someone who comes unexpectedly and wins It.”
