This continues even after the lucky eight have been selected, including the following: Mike Decker AND Dave Chisnall less than impressed enough to miss it. According to James Wade however, the disappointed ones just have to deal with it.
Grand Prix World Champion De Decker in particular caused a stir when he failed to react. “Honestly, I think their decision is unfair and scandalous,” the Belgian said in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad. “I don’t understand it at all, especially Aspinall and Price. They didn’t deserve it.”
However, as mentioned, Wade believes disappointed players must now let their darts do the talking. “Ultimately, if you shed tears over what you think is unfair in a game of darts, you will cry all day long, so you just have to get on with it,” writes The Machine in its Daily Star column. “I know from personal experience what it’s like to be left out of the Premier League when you felt your performances warranted inclusion – although certainly not this year because I didn’t deserve it. My advice to those who were not selected is to focus on your game, be consistent and let your overall performance in the tournament convince the PDC and everyone else involved not to dare leave you out.
“On the issue of consistency, Dave Chisnall – who also made his feelings known this week – won a number of European Championships last year but this does not seem to be a factor when considering selection for the Premier League,” he continued Wade, who himself played as the Premier League Darts champion in 2009. “There are a lot of cases where other players need to be included – I personally think Richie Edhouse may have been involved – and that’s why it’s such a controversial issue.”

However, given the difficult selection that took place this year, Wade does not believe that any of those selected can be called undeserving. “For three choices – Nathan Aspinall, Chris Dobey AND Gerwyn’s price – that caused controversy, it can be said that they did enough to be elected,” he analyzes. “But by the same token, some people say Mike, Dave and others did it too. That’s why we’re having this debate.”
“Let’s not forget about factors like commercialism and the appeal of certain players to the public – hence the ‘singing and dancing’ comments – but it’s not just about one thing,” Wade concludes.
