Joe Gomez has admitted he was close to leaving Liverpool before a change of plans meant staying at Anfield.
The central defender has long been a reliable player in the team Liverpool since joining from Charlton Athletic in 2015 and has been deputizing for the injured Ibrahima Konate over the past few weeks.
Perhaps, however, he was never part of the so-called Arne Slot era, everything went as he expected.
Joe Gomez was close to leaving Liverpool due to ‘genuine’ transfer interest
Gomez said Fabrizio Romano daily briefing: “I came close to leaving Liverpool last summer and it was definitely for real.
“But my focus was always on the club. I know how happy I am to be here. Next summer it will be 10 years. I don’t take it for granted because I love Liverpool.”
It is not clear from this whether Gomez was referring to the summer that has just passed (2024) or the previous one, but either way the defender clearly thinks it worked out best.
Liverpool weren’t particularly busy with either side when it came to their first-team squad in the last transfer window, with their only signings being Federico Chiesa and future signing Giorgi Mamardashvili. It’s the latter he is currently ranked 10th on FourFourTwo magazine’s list of the best goalkeepers in the world.
However, the Reds continue to face even greater uncertainty over the futures of key players Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contracts are still to be finalised.
The contracts of all three will expire at the end of the current campaign and they will be available as free agents if no new contracts are signed by then.
Liverpool comes into play Tonight is the Carabao Cup matchmatch against Southampton at St Marys, kick-off at 8:00 p.m. Southampton is definitely a weaker team against flying Liverpool, which is the leader of the Premier League and Champions League.
With such a large number of matches, it remains to be seen how Reds boss Arne Slot will rotate his squad, but regardless of which team he fields, that team will have priority in advancing to the semi-finals.
