Kansas coach Bill Self rips big man Hunter Dickinson for ‘bonehead play’ vs. TCU

Big man from Kansas Hunter Dickinson he grabbed the offensive rebound and kept the ball in his body with both hands, having no intention of letting TCU take it away from him.

Coach Bill Self wasn’t happy with how this game ended for his preseason AP All-America center who never gave up Trazarien White he tried to snatch the ball away – even after the referees blew their whistle in the second half of the match Jayhawks won 74-61 from 12th place in the standings at TCU on Wednesday night.

“I thought it was stupid that our player was holding on to the ball like that,” Self said.

The 6-foot-7 Dickinson and 6-6 White remained tangled even as they went out of bounds as whistles blew to stop the action. TCU guard Wazian Allette and a first-year student Malik Diallo he also reached for the ball. When Dickinson finally returned the ball, officials reviewed the play and issued technical fouls to both him and White.

“It was a crazy move. But what made it a crazy play more than anything else… once the whistle blows, you stop. And I’m sure they blew it a few times,” Self said. “It cost us possession, so yeah, I wasn’t happy to see that at all.”

The Horned Frogs had possession of the ball after tying the game, and White responded with a dunk off a pass from the layup Noah Reynolds with 12:44 left they increased the score to 48-47. This was the last time they led in the match.

Dickinson, who finished with a team-high 16 points and nine rebounds, was not one of the players Kansas invited for a postgame interview.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon, who was on the opposite side of the court from where the players were tangled, reacted to the play very differently than Self.

“I think it was irrelevant,” said Dixon, who did not think there was anything dirty or malicious about the performance.

“I don’t even know what the T’s were for, but I think the officials told them to stop,” he said. “They didn’t do what the officials told them to do.”
