The Uzbekistan Football Association (UFA) said that Katanek “expressed his regret that he cannot fulfill his duties professionally and fully in his current condition.”

Katanek, who coached his country at the 2002 World Cup, resigned less than two months before the qualifiers against Kyrgyzstan and Iran.
Katanek took over in August 2021 and has led Uzbekistan to second place in their Asian qualifying group, three points behind leaders Iran and third-placed United Arab Emirates with four matches remaining. The top two teams go directly to the finals.
