Kompany Uses Ronaldo & Messi Examples to Refute Kroos’ Musiala Claim

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has dismissed Toni Kroos’s observation about Jamal Musiala, citing the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Kompany believes Bayern Munich’s reliance on Musiala is no different to Real Madrid and Barcelona’s reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi respectively.

Toni Kroos believes Bayern Munich have become too reliant on Jamal Musiala

Former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid midfielder Kroos recently discussed the Bavarians’ apparent reliance on young playmaker Musiala. The six-time Champions League winner told the Einfach mal Luppen podcast:

I think Bayern’s reliance on him is extreme. Especially against good opponents. You can rely on one player. But what’s surprising is how much they rely on Jamal to even create chances“.

Due to Musiala’s stunning performance, Bayern players naturally want to pass the ball to the German as much as possible. While this left the Bavarians a bit vulnerable, it wasn’t a new tactic. Two of the most successful teams in Europe, real Madrid Barcelona often look to their match-winners Ronaldo and Messi for inspiration, and it often pays off.

Responding to Kroos’s comments, Kompany echoed the sentiment. The former Manchester City player said (via GOAL):

Doesn’t Real Madrid rely heavily on Ronaldo? Doesn’t Barcelona rely heavily on Messi? Jamal has such high qualities that it’s only natural that people talk about him a lot. He is definitely a special player and of course he is important for us. But Michael Olise, for example, also has a lot of goals and assists. Of course, there are not many players who have scored 15 goals, but the goals are common to them.

The 21-year-old Musiala has been in impeccable form in the Bundesliga this season. In 11 games, he scored 8 goals and provided 2 assists. He also scored three times in the DFB-Pokal before the Bavarians suffered a shock defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the last 16. Musiala also performed well in the Champions League, scoring one goal and providing two assists in five games.
