Jarno Bottenberg caused a big surprise Lake. The Dutchman defeated his compatriot and main favorite Jimmy van Schie 3-1 and qualified for the quarter-finals of the English League Cup WDF World Championships.
Van Schie started with a 16-darter and immediately started the first part of the match. Then he missed 110 points and it was 2-0, Bottenberg took advantage and equalized with a double 10.
In the next match, Bottenberg managed to score 110 points, giving him a 1-2 lead. The 23-year-old then hit a 12-dart shot, which surprisingly won the first match.
Number two on the ranking list couldn’t keep up with Bottenberg and had to give his compatriot the first game of the second set. A 14-darter put Van Schie back on level terms.
Bottenberg managed to keep his own leg and put pressure on his compatriot in the fourth game with points of 180 and 140. Van Schie managed to get back to 2-2 after double 1, but the player from Drachten scored double 15 and increased his lead to 0-2 in sets.
In the third set, van Schie finally gained some more space from his opponent and quickly took a 2-0 lead in the legs. However, Bottenberg stayed on the pitch and cleverly got back to 2-2, thus one step away from a very big surprise. However, 31-year-old Brabander did not allow this to happen and arranged a comeback with a double 2.
Bottenberg missed a bullseye in the fourth set and led 0-2 in legs. Van Schie then also missed two darts on a double 8, giving Bottenberg a match point on a double 16.
Van Schie couldn’t complete the comeback, and Bottenberg achieved the biggest feat of the tournament so far, eliminating the main favorite via a double eight. Bottenberg will face the winner of the match between Paul Lim and Gary Stone in the quarter-finals.
