It is understood United face a battle to balance their books under the PSR after losing £300m over the past three years before bearing the additional cost of sacking Erik ten Hag and bringing in Amorim to replace him.

This creates a need to sell before buying. Rashford is a homegrown player and is therefore considered a net profit in United’s PSR record. He emerged as the obvious candidate due to his spotty form and high wages – but United are reportedly not confident they will find a buyer.
