Payton Sandfort scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half as a sophomore Owen Freeman AND Brock Harding he added a double-double, and on Saturday night, Iowa beat Indiana 85-60.
Sandfort made only two free throws in the first half, but after the break he made 7 of 9 three-pointers for the Hawkeyes (12-4, 3-2 Big Ten Conference). Freeman recorded 16 points and 12 rebounds, his third double-double of the season. He also blocked four shots. Harding recorded 10 points and 10 assists for his second double-double of the season.
Drew Thelwell and Josh Dix both scored 12 points for Iowa.
Myles Rice had 12 points and five assists for the Hoosiers (13-4, 4-2), who ended a five-game winning streak. Oumara Ballo In total, he scored 10 points and 13 rebounds, giving him his fourth double-double of the season.
Freeman had 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half, and Dix and Harding each scored nine as Iowa took a 43-33 advantage at halftime. Rice had 11 points for Indiana at halftime. Both teams shot over 52% from the floor, but the Hawkeyes took six more shots than the Hoosiers and made five of them.
Sandfort hit a three-pointer and was fouled on one less than a minute later, missing all three free throws for a 52-36 lead with 17:24 left. Just over four minutes later, Sandfort hit a three-pointer to make it 65-40, and Iowa’s lead stayed above 20 for the final 14:41. With 1:39 left in the game, the Sandfort shooter increased the lead to 30.
Iowa will play against Southern California on Tuesday. Indiana hosts No. 13 Illinois on Tuesday.
