Guardiola’s comments came a day after he insisted City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak was giving him unequivocal support amid the club’s worst run in 21 years.

Guardiola – who signed a new contract last month – discussed his own role in the club’s decline alongside Al Mubarak in weekly dialogue with the pair.

‘We say, ‘OK, what’s the situation and what do we need to do to improve the team and let’s go to the next one’, and it’s always been positive.’
