Sophia McKinlay defeated Lerena Rietbergen to continue his dream run on the court Lake stage this week and will play in two finals on Sunday. Her goal is to win a double world title in the girls’ and women’s categories.
Landmark WDF World Championships debut and almost lost to Rietbergen, but she sensed the Dutchwoman’s nerves and suppressed her own doubts to win.
“In the first set I was a bit angry with myself for missing opportunities, so when I took the second set and went to break, I was talking to myself and thinking, just take your chances, Sophie, and when I won the next set 3-0 I was happy, “I felt comfortable and I felt confident that I wasted a few chances, but I think maybe she got a little nervous and I just tried to use all the emotions to my advantage,” he said. Playing in two finals on Sunday, McKinlay spoke out after beating Rietbergen, and the girls final against Paige Pauling was confirmed shortly thereafter, and after saying she dreamed of winning the match, it was beyond her wildest dreams.
“It’s a dream come true, obviously since I was a little girl I dreamed of playing for Lakeside. When I saw I was drawn against Lisa (Ashton), I thought it was a tough first round, but everything is on track to make it to the finals. beyond anything I could have dreamed of.”
She praised Greaves before it was confirmed that it was McKinlay vs. Greaves in said final, and joked that she might have to hit 180s on every throw to get close to her.
“In my opinion, Beau is probably the greatest women’s darts player of all time. Growing up in the youth team with Beau, she is a wonderful person and everything she has achieved. I don’t think anyone else will reach her level, but if I can do even half of what she does, I’ll be proud of myself.”
“I think I’ll just have to do a 180 on every throw,” she joked. “Hit the double first dart and I think that’s what I need to do to beat Beau.”
