Rangers are now inquiring about signing a new defender for Philippe Clement as they look to renew a squad that has struggled this season, according to a new report.
Rangers season so far
A penalty defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Celtic in the Scottish League Cup final at the weekend was the latest questionable result for Clement’s side in a season that has not gone to plan.
Ibrox fought back to level the score at 3-3 and send it into extra time and penalties, but Kasper Schmeichel saved Ridvan Yilmaz’s penalty , the only missed penalty of the shootout, which Ibrox ultimately lost, helping Celtic clinch the trophy.
There is no doubt that Rangers have improved since a slow start to the season but remain 11 points behind the Scottish Premiership after losing three games in the opening weeks of the campaign.
With title dreams potentially over and the League Cup no more, the Scottish Cup and Europa League are arguably all the Gers have left to play this season and they have impressed in Europe.

Currently in eighth place with two games remaining, they have lost just one and held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw in their most recent match, which puts them in the knockout stages. Vantage point. But now, attention seems to be turning to future transfers in 2025.
Rangers inquire about signing new defender
Here’s a report from Morocco that claims Rangers have made inquiries about the signing of 24-year-old defender Hatim Esawabi Before the transfer window opens next summer.
Esawabi is a 6ft 1in centre-back who currently plays for Moroccan champions Rabat, from whom Rangers poached Hamza I in the recent summer transfer window Gamanet.
Now, their scouts have been “impressed” with his former team-mate and compatriot Esawabi, with reports claiming the Scottish giants are now “seriously considering recruiting him during next summer transfer window”.

Rangers have an ‘incredible’ star who could now be their next big move
After some great performances in 2024/25, Rangers could be on course for gold with the Ibrox star.
Despite the club signing Robin Proper in the summer, Rangers are still light at centre-back, with Leon King and Clinton Nsiala both young and inexperienced, while Leon Balogun will be out for the season. Turns 37 at the end and will see how he performs. The expiration of his contract at Ibrox means Rangers may need to add another option at the heart of the defence.
Esawabi could be a logical replacement, the defender is unlikely to be an expensive signing and considering he is only 24 years old and close to the peak of his career, he may still have over a decade left time.
There is no mention of a price tag or Sowaby’s own aspirations in the report, but Rangers have been linked with Igamane and could return next summer to use the same formula again to upgrade their defence.
