Raptors’ fourth-quarter comeback falls short in loss to Bull…

Coby White scored 19 points and dished out five assists for Chicago (12-15). Josh Giddy had 11 points, nine rebounds and eight assists before leaving the game with a right ankle injury in the third quarter.

RJ Barrett of Mississauga, Ont., led all scorers with 32 points as Toronto (7-20) lost its fifth straight game. He also added nine assists and five rebounds. Grady Dick scored 27 points and had 6 rebounds.

Montreal’s Chris Boucher had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench after sitting out the Raptors’ last three games.

Center Jakob Poeltl had six points, five rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes of action but strained his left groin early in the fourth quarter, adding to Toronto’s injury woes.

All-Star forward Scotty Barnes participated in the Raptors’ shootaround Monday morning. Head coach Darko Radjakovic said Barnes remains cleared for contact as he recovers from a right ankle sprain but may increase his volume starting with Tuesday’s practice.

There were no updates on starting point guard Immanuel Quickley (UCL partial tear) and veteran forward Bruce Brown (arthroscopic surgery).

Late in the fourth quarter, Barrett’s four-foot shot sparked a 9-0 run that brought the Raptors within one point with 2:28 left.

Trailing by three points with 36 seconds left, Barrett missed another jumper this time from six feet. Vucevic scored on Chicago’s next possession to extend the Bulls’ lead to five.

Backup point guard Jamal Shedd grabbed an offensive rebound on the next possession and passed for Toronto, then Talen Horton-Tucker hit one of two free throws. When the final score of the game ended, Scheider hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Bulls: Stout interior defense stymied Barrett and Poeltl in the first half, and the Bulls frequently disrupted Toronto’s potent transition attack. Chicago, who came off the bench, also scored 50 points, with Horton Tucker scoring 15 points.

Raptors: Poor 3-point shooting in the first half hurt the Toronto Raptors, as the home team shot 3 of 15 from beyond the arc. They made 9 of 26 three-pointers, 3 points better than their worst performance of the season.

Poeltl’s night ended when he suffered a serious slip and strained his groin just 1:48 into the fourth quarter, tiptoeing toward the Raptors locker room. His absence allowed Vucevic to free up space and finish the game strong.

Toronto has had 11 players out with injuries this season, missing a total of 107 games. The Raptors have spent more than $23 million on injured players this season, second-most in the NBA behind the New Orleans Pelicans.

Bulls: Continue their East Coast road trip against the NBA champion Celtics in Boston on Thursday.

Raptors: Have two days off before hosting the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday.
