Amorim given free rein over Rashford and questions ‘choices’ of entourage | Manchester United

Ruben Amorim’s decision to leave Marcus Rashford out of Manchester United’s past three match-day squads is under no pressure from head coach Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s football department.

The Portuguese also questioned the “choice” of those around Rashford following an interview with journalist Henry Winter two days after the Manchester City game where the forward said he was “Ready for a new challenge”. This is interpreted as the player asking for a move.

“It’s a difficult situation but I understand that there are a lot of people around a player like this and to make some choices that are sometimes not the player’s first impression,” Amorim said on Monday.

“I’m always here to help Marcus as another player and do what they need to do. I say they chose that interview because it’s not just Marcus.”

Rashford will be sold in the January transfer window, a decision endorsed by Ratcliffe, but it is understood the player’s resignation from the squad was entirely Amorim’s choice.

Amorim again left the forward out of the 20-man squad 3-0 loss against Bournemouth Sunday at Old Trafford. After not being in Rashford’s squad Loss to Tottenham in the Carabao Cup Thursday and City wins previous sunday

After the 27-year-old and Alejandro Garnacho were dropped for the City game, Amorim said: “Performance in training, performance in games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with your teammates is important, the way you push your teammates. ” He has since described Rashford’s absence as a “selection” factor.

Despite Amorim being cited as the reason for the England international’s departure and told he would be reinstated if his training performance improves, it is unclear whether Rashford will be recalled.
