Darts World Championship Qualifier Sandro by Eric Sosinga just days after he was forced to withdraw from the tournament at the last minute, he was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Those watching at the stadium and at home were shocked as the Filipino, who had played earlier last year, had to suddenly withdraw due to chest discomfort and had to be taken to hospital.
He had to withdraw from a draw with Ian White, who had a bye, then dropped Ritchie Edhouse and is now fighting Luke Littler.
PDC said in a statement providing an update to those concerned: “Professional Darts Corporation can provide an update on the health of Sandro Eric Sosing, who withdrew ahead of his first round match against Ian White at the World Darts Championships on Friday 20 December.
“Sosing reported numbness and muscle pain during the build-up to the match, and after being assessed by on-site medical staff, he was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
“He then underwent a neurological evaluation and was diagnosed with GBS Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
“He remains under medical care in hospital but hopes to be able to return home soon.
“Sandro would like to thank everyone who asked about his well-being, for their wishes and kind messages.”
GBS is a rare disease that affects the nerves in the body and can affect senses, movement, breathing and heartbeat. He was also denied a cash reward of £7,500, despite circumstances under PDC rules.
They state: “A player who qualifies for the main draw but does not participate will not be eligible for the prize money awarded in that event.”
