Scottie Scheffler’s 2025 PGA Tour debut will have to wait.
The world No. 1 announced on Instagram on Monday that he was withdrawing from next week’s American Express to continue his rehabilitation from a freak hand injury he suffered while preparing Christmas dinner.
“After consulting with the medical team, I have made the decision to withdraw from next week’s American Express tournament to give my injury more time to heal,” Scheffler wrote. “I still hope to start the 2025 season in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-am.”
Scheffler he suffered a stab wound to his right hand while preparing Christmas dinner. An injury forced him to withdraw from the season-opening Sentry, which was won by Hideki Matsuyama on the weekend with a historic result.
Scheffler’s manager, Blake Smith, said last month that Scheffler’s expected recovery time would be three to four weeks. This coincided with The American Express, which will air January 16-19 in La Quinta, California.
“On Christmas Day, while preparing dinner, Scottie suffered a stab wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass,” Smith said in a Dec. 27 statement. “There were small fragments of glass left on my hand that required surgery. He was told he should be back to full fitness in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to retire from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament will be The American Express.”
Scheffler is coming off a season in which he won seven times on the PGA Tour and nine times around the world, including a Masters victory and an Olympic gold medal.
The 28-year-old also joined Tiger Woods as the only players to win three consecutive seasons as PGA Tour Player of the Year and he finished second to Woods in the latest PGA Tour Player Impact Program.
Scheffler now hopes to make his season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which will be held Jan. 30-Feb. 2. Last season, Scheffler finished sixth in this event. This will be the second flagship event in the 2025 calendar.
