Scottie Scheffler will miss the first event of the new season after suffering a hand injury requiring surgery.
His agent, Blake Smith, released a statement Friday afternoon explaining the incident and its fallout:
“On Christmas Day, while preparing dinner, Scottie suffered a stab wound to the palm of his right hand from broken glass. There were small fragments of glass left in the hand that required surgery. He was told he should be back to full fitness in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to retire from The Sentry. His next scheduled tournament will be The American Express.”
Scheffler is coming off one of the greatest seasons in PGA Tour history, winning seven tournaments, including the Masters, The Players, the Tour Championship and four signature events. He was also a FedExCup champion and won gold at the Paris Olympics.
The Sentry, which will be held January 2-5 at the Plantation Course on Maui, will kick off the 2025 PGA Tour season. The American Express is the third tournament of the calendar year (after the Sony Open in Hawaii) and will be held January 16-19 in La Quinta in California.
