January 27 – Sevilla’s Kik Salas awaits a trial date after being formally charged late last week by Spanish prosecutors with match-fixing charges.
Conviction by a trial court can mean six months to three years in prison. The RFEF ban stipulates, if convicted, a five-year ban from professional football and a fine of up to €30,000.
Salas was arrested and briefly held last Tuesday as part of an investigation against Salas and two other youths who were part of his circle. Salas is alleged to have deliberately earned yellow cards in matches last season in favor of betting by relatives.
In the 2023-24 season, Salas has received 10 yellow cards in almost 30 bets, including seven in the last nine La Liga games.
Authorities said they have not ruled out the possibility of a major match-fixing network.
A Sevilla statement said: “Following what happened today with our player Keike Salas, the club wishes to record our full respect for the judicial process as well as the presumption of our player’s innocence.”
“The club would also like to state that we condemn any fraudulent activity in the world of sport and in particular that could affect the integrity of competition.”
