NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Titans plan to change their quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday.
Mason Rudolph is the logical choice to replace starter Will Levis, who committed four turnovers in Sunday’s 37-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals He was later benched.
Revis, who was replaced by Rudolph in Sunday’s game, threw his third interception of the game, one of six interceptions thrown by Bengals safety Geno Stone.
When asked about the possible changes Monday, Callahan said he would make a decision in the next few days.
“All the players involved are going to do their best and the players preparing for Sunday’s game want to feel like we’re going to put them in a position to win,” Callaghan said.
Callahan must strike a balance between trying to coach Levis through a poor showing while ensuring he has the team in the best possible position. Turning to Rudolph shows that if everyone performs poorly, they are all equally responsible.
Rudolph has made four starts for the Titans this season while Levis is out with a sprained right shoulder. Tennessee has won two of its three games with Rudolph under center.
Rudolph, a five-year veteran who signed with the Titans as a free agent last offseason, passed for 1,015 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.
Levis, who was selected by the Titans in the second round of the 2023 draft, has 12 interceptions this season, tied for fourth in the NFL. His four interceptions for touchdowns were the most of any quarterback this season.
Levis’ quarterback rating of 30.2 ranked 33rd among 34 qualifying quarterbacks. He threw for 1,916 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
The Titans hired Callahan because of his extensive experience working with quarterbacks, including Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, Los Angeles Rams Super Bowl champion Matthew Stafford and Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow Luo. The Titans’ plan is to pair Callahan with a strong roster and give Levis a chance to prove he can be their franchise quarterback.
With three games remaining, the quarterback’s future is uncertain as Levi has yet to take any steps to solidify himself as the starter for next season and Rudolph is set to become a free agent after this season. But Callahan is focused on winning Sunday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts.
“We’re in a week-to-week battle right now, trying to find the best way to win football games, trying to put out the best performance we can,” Callahan said Monday. “Those are the issues we have a chance to sit down at the end of the season. It comes from really looking at the overall picture of the job and where we are at.”
