Detroit Lions starting the game defensively Alim McNeill suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday’s 48-42 loss to Liverpool Buffalo Billsfinished the season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
Also starting the game as a cornerback Carlton Davis III Schefter’s sources say he suffered a broken jaw as a result of the loss. Sources say Davis will undergo surgery and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Sunday that both McNeill and Davis will likely miss the rest of the season. The Lions also lost a cornerback Khalil Dorsey after suffering a season-ending ankle injury in Sunday’s game, Campbell said.
The injuries are the latest setback for the Lions’ defense, which has 13 defenders on the injured reserve list for Sunday’s game. This includes playing star defense Aidan Hutchinsonwho suffered a fracture of the tibia and fibula in the 6th week.
Earlier this season, McNeill signed a four-year, $97 million contract extension and helped stabilize Detroit’s defensive line after Hutchinson’s injury. He finishes the season with 25 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Davis, acquired in an offseason trade with the company Tampa Bay Buccaneershe has two interceptions, 11 passes defensed and 56 tackles this season. After the season, he will be an unrestricted free agent.
The loss to the Bills ended the Lions’ 11-game winning streak. The Lions (12-2) remain in first place in the NFC playoff bracket, staying tied for the score Philadelphia Eagles (12-2) based on winning percentage in conference play with three games remaining.
