Reliable sources have confirmed that the south coast side have previously considered hiring Hjulmand, who led Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was assistant to Ralf Hasenhuttl during his time in charge at St Mary’s, has also been discussed but his compensation package will be a stumbling block.

Hjulmand, who stepped down as Denmark manager after Euro 2024 and guided them to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022, is on West Ham’s potential list. Replaced Julen Lopetegui.

The 52-year-old is understood to be open to taking the Premier League job.

More in the Premier League

Hjulmand’s senior coaching career began in 2006 as head coach at Lyngby Boldklub after working in their youth setup.

He then joined FC Nordsjaelland as an assistant before replacing Morten Wieghorst in the hotseat.

Nordsjælland won the Danish Superliga for the first time in their history under Hjulmand in the 2011/12 season.

The former defender left the club in 2014 to join Mainz but returned just a year later for a second stint until 2019.

A year later, Hulmand took charge of the Denmark national team and oversaw three major tournaments during his tenure.

He could become a sensible appointment for a Southampton side who sit at the bottom of the Premier League table.
